Here is our spring quarter newsletter that was made by our VP of Communications, Derek Meenach.
Within this newsletter includes: Carlson Leadership Academy, our annual Golden Heart Formal, and Washington Gamma’s upcoming events, such as our “Operation Not Forgotten” philanthropy on Memorial Day and our “Burning Heart” ceremony.
Eastern Washington University’s Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) chapter is alive and well. June 1, 2015, marked our 24th year on Eastern’s campus. There are currently 14 active members in the chapter. This pass spring posed challenges for the chapter, and yet members of the chapter were able to move forward with headquarter and university support.
A highlight of spring quarter was earning the highest GPA of all Eastern fraternities with 14 members at a 3.34 chapter GPA and six members making the Dean’s List (students earning above a 3.5 quarter GPA).
Although SigEp did not win Greek Week this year, another highlight for the end of the year was earning fourth out of the five fraternities participating. SigEp was mostly active in the participation-point events, like co-ed trivia and community service projects, and in 3-on-3 basketball where we won one of two games. We did not have the numbers to participate like the fraternity did in past years.
We are in the process for planning the next year: Chapter operations will be better structured and member expectations will be raised and held accountable. The chapter will rise to the top in all aspects of Greek life. The minimum community service hours per member will be raised from 10 to 15 hours per quarter. An academic plan will be implemented providing better resources and support for members. Educational programming put on through the Balanced Man Program will grow members both academically and professionally. At least two philanthropies will be planned this next year for nonprofit organizations, and at least two fundraisers for the chapter will be held.
The Balanced Man Scholarship is now available on our chapter website. The link has been emailed out to about 550 incoming male freshmen with a GPA above a 3.0. This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for the chapter to reach out into the community to reward men exhibiting our balanced man ideal and make a positive impression among our Greek peers and university staff and faculty. Spread the word!
All our plans for recruitment, member development and other chapter-related activities are just plans—this year will be about implementing drastic changes within the chapter to make an impact at our school. This year is about proving that we are an added value to Eastern’s campus.
